Updated M-Pesa Charges

Where would Kenya be without M-Pesa? That is a good question for another day. Safaricom’s M-Pesa is one innovation that has helped millions over the years. Recently Safaricom revised its Mpesa charges, and you will have to pay more to send or receive payments on your mobile phone.

The move to increase the Mpesa Charges by Safaricom came shortly after the 2018/19 National budget was tabled in parliament. In the budget, Treasury CS Henry Rotich revealed that customers would now be charged 12 percent up from 10 percent of every cost of money transfer.

New M-Pesa Charges

Safaricom new M-Pesa charges will force the user to pay the following fees in every transaction:

  • All deposits to your account or receiving money on Mpesa is free
  • Sending between Ksh.1-100 to other MPesa users you won’t be charged anything
  • If you are sending an amount of between 501 to 1,000 M-Pesa will charge you Ksh 15
  • Withdrawing any amount between Ksh. 501 to Ksh 1,000 will cost you Ksh 28 shillings.
  • Sending any amount between KSh. 1501 to Ksh 2500 will cost you 41 Kenyan shillings.
  • Sending an amount of more than 2501 and less than 3500 will be charged at Ksh 56 bob
  • If you want to withdraw Ksh 5,000, you will have to leave 67 bob to Safaricom
  • and to send 5000 you will be charged Ksh 61 bob.
  • Ksh 10, 000 shillings will cost Ksh 87 bob
  • While sending Ksh 20,000 will cost you 112
  • and when you go to withdraw the Ksh 20,000, you will part with Ksh 180.

That is just a summary of the new Mpesa rates that were updated in June 2018 by Safaricom LLC. For more detailed charges, see the image below.
