This post about scholarship provides information about Education sponsors in Kenya, i.e where a third party provides the student with money to help pay for their education.

Sponsorships are much more common in Europe, where private benefactors sponsor students from the local community. In Kenya, the term sponsorship is much less common. International students talk about “finding a sponsor” while Kenya students like to talk about “finding a scholarship”.

In Kenya, two main bodies provide scholarship to academic bright students with poor financial background. The two bodies are the Government of Kenya and Non-governmental organization (NGOs’).

The government is the main shareholder in loan provision to the student joining the University and TVET institutions for the first time through the Central Bank of Kenya and the Higher Education Loans Board. Here are the top Education sponsors in Kenya in random order.

The Higher Education Loans Board

The Higher Education Loans Board, HELB, is the leading financier of higher education in Kenya. It is a State Corporation that was established by an Act of Parliament (Cap 213A) in 1995.

The mandate of the Board is to disburse loans, bursaries, and scholarships to students pursuing higher education in the recognized institution. HELB provides affordable loans bursaries and scholarship to Kenyans pursuing higher education.

Key among the responsibilities of the Board is sourcing funds, establishing, managing and awarding loans bursaries and scholarships to Kenyans pursuing higher education in recognized institutions. Through the Act, the Board has been able to recover funds loaned out to Kenyans in the past.

Kenyatta University OVS Scholarship Opportunities

Kenyatta University lays emphasis in the societal development of an individual and as such has established the Orphans and Vulnerable Students (OVS) Scholarship fund to cater for the less privileged but deserving persons to pursue higher education at Kenyatta University.

The MasterCard Foundation Scholarships for Kenyans

The MasterCard Foundation Scholarship Program provides scholarship opportunities to the young individual who has demonstrated academic talent. The MasterCard Foundation Scholars Program is a growing initiative and up to date, the Program has committed over $700 million to supporting the education and leadership development of over 30,000 young people

The Rattansi Educational Trust aims to eradicate poverty through scholarship education for needy Kenyan students. The Educational Trust has helped many Kenyans achieve their higher education dreams through its charity work. The Trust disbursed scholarship funds to Universities and other colleges as bursaries for students with financial needs.

Swedish Institute Study Scholarships for Developing Countries

The Swedish Institute Study Scholarships (SISS) are awarded to students from selected countries for full-time master’s level studies in Sweden starting in the autumn semester 2022. The scholarships cover both living costs and tuition fees. An estimated 335 scholarships will be available.

DAAD M.Sc and Ph.D. Scholarships for Kenyans

DAAD promotes international academic exchange as well as educational cooperation with developing countries through various funding and scholarship programs.

These scholarships are targeting applicants from Kenya and Sub-Saharan Africa region to support selected M.Sc and Ph.D. Programmes.

The Rockefeller Foundation Scholarship at UON

Undergraduates and Graduates Scholarly Residencies Scholarship in the area of Basic Survival Safeguards, Social and Economic, Urbanization, Global Health, Climate and Environment, and lastly Security at the University of Nairobi.

The Aga Khan Foundation Scholarship for Developing Countries (Masters & Ph.D.)

The Aga Khan Foundation provides a limited number of scholarships each year for postgraduate studies to outstanding students from developing countries who have no other means of financing their studies. Scholarships are awarded on a 50% grant:50% loan basis through a competitive application process once a year in June or July.

Gandhi Smarak Nidhi Fund Scholarship for Kenyans

The Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Academy of Society (MGMAS) started a trust fund in 1962; in the name of Gandhi Smarak Nidhi Fund (GSNF) that was to assist in the development of higher education in East Africa.

Money for this fund mainly came from the Government of India and from the three East African colonies. The money from this fund was used to construct the Gandhi Wing and the Gandhi Memorial Library as well as assisting in the purchase of the land on which the Chiromo Campus is built.
