Many Kenyans who make money online do so through online jobs. As I mentioned in the section above, to earn money online, you have to treat it as a full-time job.
There are several jobs online that you can do in the comfort of your home or cyber cafe and earn a decent income from it. Most of these jobs are found on Freelancing websites and include the following:
- Academic Writing
- Virtual Assistants
- Web Development
- Graphic Design
- Digital Marketing
- Article Writing

2. Earn through Blogging
To earn money through a blog, you need a website. To get a website, you need a domain name and hosting account. Usually, these are purchased online and renewed annually.
You have to identify a Niche for your blog and create amazing content that will make people visit your blog. If you get enough traffic to your blog, you can introduce the following avenues of earning through a blog.

3. Selling Online Courses
If you have a skill that you can teach others, there is an option online where you can create a course around your expertise and sell it online.
You don’t need to create your website but use already existing platforms and put your content out there for people from all over the world to learn.
One such place is known as Udemy it is free to create an account as a teacher and sell your course. You can upload course materials, manage learners and accept payments.
4. Selling books online
If you wanted to publish a book ten years ago, you would have to look for a publisher to work with. But thanks to the internet, you can self-publish your book and sell it online.

5. Starting on Online Shop
If you already run a local business like a shop, you can take it online and sell it to more people from different places. You will need a website with shop software that will handle products and accept online payments.
You can accept payments through M-Pesa too since it is popular here in Kenya.
The easiest way to start an online shop is through WordPress CMS and a plugin known as WooCoommerce. There are already M-Pesa Plugins for WooCommerce that will allow you to accept mobile money payments.
You then need good clear images of your products and descriptions for the products.
6. Using Local Online Marketplaces
Another more straightforward option for earning money online is to sell your products through Online Marketplaces such as Jumia and Kilimall.
They will take care of shipping and marketing for you, all you need is to supply your products, and they sell.
You can also earn money online from marketplaces by becoming an affiliate marketer as I have mentioned above. You need a website or a good following online for this.
